The Abia Leadership Academy has successfully concluded its pioneer 7-day leadership training program, which began on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Government College, Umuahia. A total of 250 young participants between the ages of 16 and 20 were part of this historic first cohort, and the reactions gathered today at the close of the program highlight the transformative impact of the academy.
The initiative, powered by the Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex C. Otti, OFR, is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders for the demands of governance, innovation, and service in a rapidly changing world. It is expected that 1,000 young Abians will pass through the academy before the end of 2025, with new cohorts resuming in the coming weeks.
Applicants were admitted through a rigorous process of testing and interviews, ensuring only the best candidates were selected. The program emphasized leadership values, critical thinking, discipline, and the spirit of service — skills that participants described as life-changing.
Reactions at the End of the 7 Days Training:
Kelechi Ejimofor, one of the participants, expressed gratitude for the exposure:
“I learnt a lot about mental strength, finance, and personal purpose. I discovered my ‘Ikigai’ here — my reason for living. I now know I will excel in tech and data analysis, and I want to use this to solve problems in Abia State. I thank the governor for this opportunity.”
Dodoh Okafor, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, highlighted the merit-based selection:
“The process was rigorous because we wanted only the best. While Governor Otti is focused on infrastructure, he also believes in building leaders who cannot be corrupted in the future.”
Johnson Abali, the lead consultant and program director, described the impact as unprecedented:
“These young people have shown tremendous promise. A time will come when, to occupy positions of authority in Abia, you must have attended this academy.”
Okezie Divine, a student at Abia State University, said:
“This program helped me discover my leadership potential. I am grateful to Governor Otti for making this possible.”
Oluomachi Favour, another participant, added:
“I thought it was just about leadership, but it touched every aspect of our lives — intellectually, socially, and spiritually. My mindset has been transformed.”
Professor Adanma Ngozi Ohia, Administrative Head of the Academy, became emotional at the closing:
“We are happy this vision came to life. Without Governor Otti, this wouldn’t be possible. Abia will surprise the world and overtake others ahead of us.”
The Abia Leadership Academy is more than a program — it is a movement to raise young leaders with integrity, vision, and capacity. For many of the first 250 participants, the journey of leadership has just begun, and their testimonies underscore the life-long impact of the academy.
Applicants who scaled the test and interviews are encouraged to constantly check their emails and text messages for updates on subsequent cohorts.
The future of Abia is in safe hands, and the journey has only just begun.
