APC wins Ondo South by-election despite low voter turnout

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Dayo Faduyile of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Ondo South Senatorial by election in Ondo State after securing a commanding 68,474 votes.

According to the official results announced by INEC, the APC candidate defeated other contenders by a wide margin, with the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) polling 1,411 votes, the Action Peoples Party (APP) recording 213 votes, while BP managed just 70 votes.

On paper, the result appears to be a comfortable victory for the ruling party.

However, beneath the numerical dominance lies a more significant political message: voter apathy.

The election witnessed a notably low turnout across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district, a development political observers say should concern the APC despite its victory.

Low turnout in elections, particularly in strongholds of dominant political parties, often reflects deeper issues such as disenchantment, weak grassroots mobilization, or dissatisfaction with candidate selection processes.

For the APC, this victory may therefore be less of a celebration and more of a caution.

The Ondo South election offers an early indicator of what could unfold in future contests if the party fails to pay closer attention to internal democracy and public sentiment. In many electoral cycles, parties that rely solely on structure without measuring the popularity and legitimacy of their candidates often face resistance at the polls.

The warning is clear, political dominance cannot substitute for popular acceptance.

As the country gradually looks toward the next general election, especially the presidential race, the APC may need to rethink its candidate selection strategy.

Fielding candidates perceived as disconnected from the grassroots or lacking broad public appeal could depress turnout among its own base and create openings for opposition parties to capitalize on voter dissatisfaction.

In competitive democracies, elections are not won only by party platforms but by the credibility and acceptability of the individuals who carry those platforms.

The Ondo South result may have handed the APC a seat, but it has also handed the party a message, one it ignores at its own political risk.
