China Ranks Nigeria Largest Engineering Contracting Partner

Nigeria has emerged as China’s largest engineering contracting market, according to Li Hengtian, Deputy Director of the China International Communications Group (CICG).

Li disclosed this on Wednesday in Beijing during the opening of a seminar for prominent Nigerian commentators and media professionals.

He also described Nigeria as China’s second-largest export market, third-largest trading partner and one of its major investment destinations in Africa.

Li, who also serves as Deputy Director of CICG’s Education and Training Centre, organisers of the seminar, said both countries were making steady progress in strengthening bilateral relations and economic cooperation.

According to him, increasing exchanges between citizens of both nations reflect the growing partnership between China and Nigeria.

“More Nigerian youths are travelling to China in pursuit of knowledge, while more Chinese companies and builders are investing in Nigeria’s development,” he said.

He noted that both countries are currently working towards building a stronger China-Nigeria community with a shared future.

Li further stressed the importance of the media in promoting mutual understanding and addressing stereotypes between nations.

“The media must help break the barriers created by single narratives. We are here not only to tell China’s stories, but also to listen to Nigeria’s stories and jointly deepen the friendship between both countries,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of the Nigerian delegation, Olunkwa Felix expressed appreciation to the organisers for hosting the seminar, describing it as an avenue for learning, cultural exchange and international cooperation.

He said China continues to play a significant role in global development, innovation and education, adding that the seminar would broaden participants’ perspectives and strengthen international relationships.

“We believe the experiences and knowledge gained here will positively impact our careers, institutions and communities when we return home,” Felix stated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that about 20 journalists and officials from the National Assembly and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are participating in the seminar.

Among participants are NAN Editor-in-Chief, Mufutau Ojo; Editor-in-Chief of Premium Times, Musikilu Mojeed; ThisDay Abuja Editor, Dr Iyobosa Uwugiaren; and Kaftan TV Head of Station, Reuben Okala.

Others include Deputy Editor of Daily Trust, Isiaka Wakili, and The Guardian Newspapers’ Abuja Bureau Chief, Dr Bridget Onochie, among others.
