Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has called on women to rise to the challenge of instilling good values in their children as part of efforts to curb rising social vices threatening the moral fabric of society.

Speaking at the grand finale of the 2025 Women’s August Meeting held at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, Governor Otti described women as one of the most critical stakeholders in shaping the future of Abia and Nigeria at large.

The Governor emphasized that mothers have the responsibility to teach children the virtues of hard work, resilience, and patience in pursuing noble ideals, warning that the spread of crime, drug abuse, and desperation for quick wealth is already consuming many young people.

“The entire society shall be doomed if mothers refuse to collectively resist social behaviours that are inimical to the healthy growth of the population,” Governor Otti cautioned.

He urged women to join hands with his administration in the campaign against illicit drugs, criminality, and negative social practices, stressing that social reorientation is one of the priorities of his government.

Governor Otti also assured women of his administration’s commitment to their empowerment, revealing that at least 60% of the ₦2 billion community-based cooperative support fund will be allocated to women in agriculture, a step he said would improve economic independence and family stability.

On health, the Governor pledged a holistic approach to reducing maternal and infant mortality through quality healthcare, education, and support for pregnant and nursing mothers.

The Governor further used the platform to congratulate Abia women on the success of the 2025 August Meeting, commending them for their sacrifices and their strong role in his 2023 electoral victory.

The event also featured empowerment programmes for women across the 17 LGAs, spearheaded by the Governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, alongside competitions and cultural displays. It was graced by top government officials, dignitaries, and members of the State Executive Council.
