In a strongly worded public statement, the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti has taken aim at former Information Commissioner Eze Chikamnayo, dismissing his recent criticisms and allegations against the current administration as baseless political blackmail.
The governor, while responding to a question during a media interaction, accused Chikamnayo of being a political opportunist who has tried to insert himself into every administration since 1999.
“This is a different government. And my response to his request that came at the beginning of this administration remains the same, NO,” the governor said. “He sent someone to me wanting to be part of this government. I told him no. And the answer is still no.”
The governor alleged that Chikamnayo, who has been affiliated with past administrations, resorted to blackmail in 2007 and was subsequently rewarded with political appointments. The governor firmly stated that such tactics will not work with the current leadership.
“If he likes, let him hang on a transformer. This government will not call him,” he stated bluntly.
Dismissing a request from Chikamnayo for video evidence of developmental work in his local government, Umunneochi, the governor challenged him to return home and witness the ongoing projects.
“As we speak, about five or six schools are being constructed in Umunneochi. He should come home and see them, if he’s not afraid,” he declared. “Why should I do a video to prove that I’m working? Go to your village. The evidence is there.”
The governor also criticized Chikamnayo’s political affiliations and credibility, questioning his current party loyalty and accusing him of being a mouthpiece for political opponents.
“They sent the wrong person. A man without credibility. Maybe they couldn’t find a man with integrity to talk rubbish, so they sent him,” he said. “Last time I checked, he was in PDP. When did he join APC?”
In a detailed defense of his administration’s developmental strides, the governor cited specific figures, stating that ₦14.43 billion has already been spent this year on renovating 61 schools across the state. He urged critics not to challenge the government on numbers they do not understand.
“If you are looking for dust to throw, don’t go into numbers. You don’t even understand numbers,” he warned.
He further accused political opponents of funding smear campaigns that have ultimately failed.
“To those hiring them, I sympathize with them. They lost their money. The halls, the T-shirts, the face caps — all wasted.”
The governor concluded by urging the public to ignore Chikamnayo’s antics, emphasizing that his administration is focused on service delivery, not political appeasement.
“I didn’t want to talk about it, but I believe people should be discerning enough to know what is right,” he said. “Even he, if he used a little of the gray matter, would have known that’s not the way to go.”
The governor’s fiery rebuttal has ignited discussions across the state, with citizens and political observers weighing in on the long-standing tension between the former commissioner and the current administration.
