A former Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Azubuike Ihejirika (retd.) has advocated for the introduction of mandatory military training for all Nigerians, beginning with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).<\/h2>\n

Naija News<\/strong> reports that the former COAS made the call on Friday night during the 50th anniversary of the Nigerian Defence Academy Regular Course 18 Alumni Association in Abuja.<\/p>\n Reflecting on his early days in military service, the former Army chief highlighted the camaraderie and sense of unity that was developed among officers during training.<\/p>\n \u201cThe discipline and patriotism instilled in us during training were instrumental in shaping our careers and our contributions to the nation,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n Ihejirika emphasised that given the current security and social climate in Nigeria, it is time to consider mandatory military training for citizens.<\/p>\n \u201cWe can start with the National Youth Service. This will help us build a generation of Nigerians who understand sacrifice, responsibility, and patriotism,<\/em>\u201d he urged.<\/p>\n Praising the government\u2019s decision to restore the old national anthem, Ihejirika noted that the anthem\u2019s line, \u201cThough tribe and tongue may differ, in brotherhood we stand,\u201d<\/em> beautifully reflects the spirit of unity that should define the country.<\/p>\n He expressed concern, however, about the anthem being reduced to mere fanfare at official events.<\/p>\n \u201cIt should be a daily reminder of our oath of allegiance. It must return to schools, communities, and national ceremonies,\u201d<\/em> he said, calling for a deeper respect for the anthem\u2019s significance.<\/p>\n Drawing from his own life, Ihejirika recounted his humble beginnings in his village in Abia and how military discipline transformed him. He credited his career success to the support of mentors and colleagues, which led to his appointment as Nigeria\u2019s 22nd Chief of Army Staff.<\/p>\n Speaking further on his advocacy, Ihejirika commended the current leadership of the Nigerian Armed Forces, noting their extensive experience and battlefield training.<\/p>\n \u201cMany of the officers leading today served in Liberia, Sierra Leone, and other conflict zones.
