Apple TV+\u2019s dark sci-fi office drama \u201cSeverance\u201d on Tuesday led the contenders for the Emmy Awards, television\u2019s version of the Oscars, with a whopping 27 nominations.<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cThe Penguin,\u201d HBO Max\u2019s Batman villain spinoff series, came in second with 24.<\/p>\n Two satires \u2014 HBO Max\u2019s skewering of the rich, \u201cThe White Lotus,\u201d and Apple\u2019s new Hollywood cringe fest, \u201cThe Studio\u201d \u2014 tied for third with 23 nominations each.<\/p>\n In the comedy categories, behind \u201cThe Studio\u201d were two past winners: \u201cHacks\u201d at 14 and \u201cThe Bear\u201d at 13.<\/p>\n The announcement from the Television Academy marks the official start of the race to the 77th Emmy Awards, set for September 14 in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n After last year\u2019s record-breaking 18 Emmy Awards for Japan-set historical epic \u201cShogun,\u201d this year\u2019s drama competition looks to be more nuanced.<\/p>\n \u201cSeverance,\u201d in which employees of biotech company Lumon have their memories surgically separated between their \u201cinnie\u201d work lives and their \u201coutie\u201d personal lives, is clearly the early favorite, with star Adam Scott a nominee for best actor.<\/p>\n But he will compete with \u201cER\u201d veteran Noah Wyle, who leads \u201cThe Pitt\u201d \u2014 HBO Max\u2019s take on the travails of a Pittsburgh emergency room team during one 15-hour shift, effectively filmed in real time.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s ER on steroids!\u201d Deadline awards expert Pete Hammond told AFP of the show, which earned 13 nods.<\/p>\n Also competing for best drama honors are Disney+\u2019s \u201cStar Wars\u201d offshoot \u201cAndor,\u201d Netflix\u2019s \u201cThe Diplomat,\u201d HBO\u2019s apocalyptic video game adaptation \u201cThe Last of Us,\u201d Hulu political thriller \u201cParadise,\u201d Apple\u2019s spy drama \u201cSlow Horses,\u201d and \u201cThe White Lotus.\u201d<\/p>\n Scott and Wyle have stiff competition for best actor: Oscar winner Gary Oldman in \u201cSlow Horses,\u201d Pedro Pascal (\u201cThe Last of Us\u201d) and Sterling K. Brown (\u201cParadise\u201d).<\/p>\n Scott\u2019s co-star Britt Lower is a nominee for best drama actress, alongside Bella Ramsey (\u201cThe Last of Us\u201d) and Keri Russell (\u201cThe Diplomat\u201d).<\/p>\n \u201cThe White Lotus\u201d earned a slew of acting nominations in the supporting categories.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Penguin\u201d is competing for best limited series honors against \u201cDying for Sex\u201d (FX) and three Netflix efforts: buzzy teen murder saga \u201cAdolescence,\u201d \u201cBlack Mirror,\u201d and true-crime saga \u201cMonsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cAdolescence\u201d breakout star Owen Cooper, who plays a 13-year-old British boy accused of murdering a female classmate, earned a nomination for supporting actor.<\/p>\n \u201cMonsters,\u201d\u00a0the story of a pair of California brothers in prison for killing their parents after what they say was years of sexual and physical abuse, earned acting nods for Cooper Koch, Javier Bardem and Chloe Sevigny.<\/p>\n Comedy newcomer\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n In the comedy categories, new series \u201cThe Studio,\u201d a satire starring Seth Rogen that eviscerates the film industry, emerged as a clear favorite.<\/p>\n Rogen also wrote and produced the show, which earned acting nominations for Ike Barinholtz, Kathryn Hahn, Catherine O\u2019Hara and six guest performers.<\/p>\n \u201cHacks\u201d \u2014 starring Jean Smart as a stand-up comedian who locks horns with her dysfunctional millennial assistant \u2014 won for best comedy and best actress in September last year, and is nominated again in those categories.<\/p>\n \u201cThe Bear,\u201d a dark satire set in the Chicago restaurant world, took the top prize at the previous ceremony (held in January 2024 due to Hollywood strikes), and its star Jeremy Allen White has two trophies for best actor.<\/p>\n Beyond those three, other nominees for best comedy series are ABC\u2019s mockumentary-style sitcom \u201cAbbott Elementary,\u201d rom-com \u201cNobody Wants This\u201d (Netflix), Hulu\u2019s \u201cOnly Murders in the Building,\u201d Apple\u2019s \u201cShrinking,\u201d and FX\u2019s vampire laugh riot \u201cWhat We Do in the Shadows.\u201d<\/p>\n Harvey Guillen (\u201cWhat We Do in the Shadows\u201d) and Brenda Song (\u201cRunning Point\u201d) unveiled the key nominations in a livestreamed ceremony.<\/p>\n Voting members of the US-based Television Academy will then have a month to catch up on their viewing before final-round voting begins in mid-August.<\/p>\n The September 14 gala will be hosted by comedian Nate Bargatze.<\/p>\n
