{"id":232860,"date":"2025-07-21T21:27:40","date_gmt":"2025-07-21T21:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abianewscentral.com.ng\/nigeria-moves-to-reduce-drug-imports-with-cardiovascular-gmp-training\/"},"modified":"2025-07-21T21:27:40","modified_gmt":"2025-07-21T21:27:40","slug":"nigeria-moves-to-reduce-drug-imports-with-cardiovascular-gmp-training","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/nigeria-moves-to-reduce-drug-imports-with-cardiovascular-gmp-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria moves to reduce drug imports with cardiovascular GMP training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria moves to reduce drug imports with cardiovascular GMP training<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">\n<p>In a move to reduce dependence on imported medicines, the Federal Government has launched a comprehensive Good Manufacturing Practices, GMP, training program aimed at strengthening local capacity for the production of high-quality cardiovascular drugs.<\/p>\n<p>The training was organised by the Federal Ministry of <a href=\"https:\/\/abianewscentral.com.ng\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health <\/a>and Social Welfare and the Presidential Initiative on Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain, PVAC, in collaboration with Resolve to Save Lives and the University of Abuja Cardiovascular Research Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The training is focused on preparing Nigerian manufacturers to meet international GMP standards, with a special emphasis on cardiovascular medicines, essential for managing hypertension and heart disease, which remain among the leading causes of death in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Fatima Gawuna, Ecosystem Enablement Analyst at PVAC, described the training as a strategic move to boost local pharmaceutical manufacturing and reduce the nation\u2019s reliance on imported medicines, which currently account for over 70 percent of Nigeria\u2019s drug supply.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we empower local manufacturers, we open the door to more affordable treatments, job creation, and the possibility of Nigeria becoming a major player in the African and global pharmaceutical markets,\u201d Gawuna said.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative was also supported by Quamed, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) Foundation, and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Group of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (PMG-MAN).<\/p>\n<p>Dr Kufor Osi, Senior Technical Advisor for Hypertension Control at Resolve to Save Lives, said the training is crucial in tackling Nigeria\u2019s hypertension crisis, with only 12 percent of an estimated 30 million hypertensive Nigerians currently having their blood pressure under control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are working to ensure that cardiovascular drugs produced in Nigeria are not only available but of the highest quality,\u201d Osi stated, adding that increased local production would also help drive down costs and improve treatment access.<\/p>\n<p>The training covered key areas such as quality control, regulatory compliance, Good Laboratory Practices, risk management, and cleanroom operations\u2014all essential for achieving GMP certification.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health, Mrs Talatu Yahaya Kassim, said the government remains committed to creating an enabling environment for domestic pharmaceutical production, including policy support and incentives like waivers on active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to reduce reliance on imports and empower local manufacturers to meet both domestic and export demands,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v9.0&amp;appId=420332301344305\" nonce=\"sm97MhBO\" type=\"pmdelayedscript\" data-cfasync=\"false\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-minify=\"1\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/>drug imports,<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/dailypost.ng\/2025\/07\/21\/nigeria-moves-to-reduce-drug-imports-with-cardiovascular-gmp-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria moves to reduce drug imports with cardiovascular GMP training In a move to reduce dependence on imported medicines, the Federal Government has launched a comprehensive Good Manufacturing Practices, GMP, training program aimed at strengthening local capacity for the production of high-quality cardiovascular drugs.
