UPDATED: Nurses, Midwives Have Called Off Strike, Says Minister

The industrial action embarked upon by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has been called off, the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, has said.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting on Friday, Pate said the decision followed agreements reached with the leadership of the nursing association.<\/span><\/p>\n However, the <\/span>leaders of the<\/span> union declined to speak on the matter after the closed-door meeting on Friday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n Nurses and midwives under the association had commenced a warning strike on July 29, 2025, following what the union described as the government\u2019s failure to respond meaningfully to its 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n The warning strike involving nurses in public Health <\/a>institutions across the country was expected to continue till August 5, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n The strike stemmed from longstanding concerns about nurses\u2019 welfare and poor working conditions, <\/span>and<\/span> the government\u2019s reluctance to address <\/span>their<\/span> concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n The union had demanded improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions for nurses across federal Health <\/a>institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n The union\u2019s National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, had stated that the Federal Government failed to engage meaningfully with the association during the window provided.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAs far as we are concerned, there has been no communication from the government to this moment. <\/span>That is why we <\/span>are saying<\/span> the strike is <\/span>going on<\/span>, and nothing is stopping it.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cEven if the government calls today or tomorrow, it won\u2019t stop the strike. They had enough time,\u201d Rilwan had noted.<\/span><\/p>\n The nurses\u2019 demands include <\/span>the<\/span> upward review of shift allowance, adjustment of uniform allowance, implementation of a separate salary structure for nurses, increased core duty allowance, mass employment of nurses, and the creation of a dedicated nursing department <\/span>in<\/span> the Federal Ministry of Health.<\/span><\/p>\n
