{"id":233583,"date":"2025-08-02T10:06:09","date_gmt":"2025-08-02T10:06:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abianewscentral.com.ng\/updated-nurses-midwives-have-called-off-strike-says-minister\/"},"modified":"2025-08-02T10:06:09","modified_gmt":"2025-08-02T10:06:09","slug":"updated-nurses-midwives-have-called-off-strike-says-minister","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/updated-nurses-midwives-have-called-off-strike-says-minister\/","title":{"rendered":"UPDATED: Nurses, Midwives Have Called Off Strike, Says Minister"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>UPDATED: Nurses, Midwives Have Called Off Strike, Says Minister<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The industrial action embarked upon by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has been called off, the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, has said.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Speaking to journalists after a closed-door meeting on Friday, Pate said the decision followed agreements reached with the leadership of the nursing association.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">However, the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">leaders of the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> union declined to speak on the matter after the closed-door meeting on Friday afternoon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Nurses and midwives under the association had commenced a warning strike on July 29, 2025, following what the union described as the government\u2019s failure to respond meaningfully to its 15-day ultimatum issued on July 14, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The warning strike involving nurses in public <a href=\"https:\/\/abianewscentral.com.ng\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health <\/a>institutions across the country was expected to continue till August 5, 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The strike stemmed from longstanding concerns about nurses\u2019 welfare and poor working conditions, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the government\u2019s reluctance to address <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">their<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> concerns.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The union had demanded improved welfare, fair allowances, and better working conditions for nurses across federal <a href=\"https:\/\/abianewscentral.com.ng\/health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health <\/a>institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The union\u2019s National Chairman, Morakinyo Rilwan, had stated that the Federal Government failed to engage meaningfully with the association during the window provided.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs far as we are concerned, there has been no communication from the government to this moment. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That is why we <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are saying<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the strike is <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">going on<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and nothing is stopping it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cEven if the government calls today or tomorrow, it won\u2019t stop the strike.
