For example, people who were formerly kind of securely middle class, not that life was rosy for them, but they got by\u2014are now people who beg and are in need. That worries me greatly,\u201d Adichie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe level of suffering, how expensive food has become\u2026 I think the biggest political judgment one can make is about the lives of ordinary people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople talk about the stock market. Personally, I don\u2019t really care about those sorts of things. What I care about is: that person earning minimum wage, how is that person getting on in this economy? It\u2019s the suffering that worries me the most. And it\u2019s terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Middle-Class Reduced To Beggars, Chimamanda Decries Hardship In Nigeria\" width=\"740\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fmm-UQFIk-4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While not excusing crime, the writer noted that when life becomes difficult, people often begin to consider actions they wouldn\u2019t ordinarily contemplate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not to excuse crime, but I think when life gets very hard, even people who before would not have considered certain things suddenly are willing to, and that\u2019s dangerous to society,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ ALSO:\u00a0<\/strong>Quitting Writing Was Never An Option Despite Earlier Rejections \u2013 Chimamanda<\/p>\n<p>Adichie also spoke on her writing career, saying that despite receiving as many as 25 rejections for her debut novel,\u00a0<i>Purple Hibiscus<\/i>, she never considered giving up.<\/p>\n<p>She emphasised that she would have continued writing even if she had never been published.<\/p>\n<p>According to Chimamanda, writing is a divine gift, something she considers spiritual and believes to be her primary purpose on earth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thought of quitting writing is never an option for me because writing is my vocation. Writing is really what I believe I am here to do; it\u2019s a bit spiritual.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel that is a gift that I am given, and so even if I hadn\u2019t been published, I would still be writing today. So, the idea of giving up writing was never an option.
