{"id":234057,"date":"2025-08-09T18:32:39","date_gmt":"2025-08-09T18:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abianewscentral.com.ng\/sowore-to-sue-nigeria-police-over-recent-detention-alleged-inhuman-treatment\/"},"modified":"2025-08-09T18:32:39","modified_gmt":"2025-08-09T18:32:39","slug":"sowore-to-sue-nigeria-police-over-recent-detention-alleged-inhuman-treatment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/sowore-to-sue-nigeria-police-over-recent-detention-alleged-inhuman-treatment\/","title":{"rendered":"Sowore to sue Nigeria police over recent detention, alleged inhuman treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sowore to sue Nigeria police over recent detention, alleged inhuman treatment<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">\n<p>Former presidential candidate and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore has resolved to sue the Nigeria Police Force over what his legal team termed \u201cinhumane treatment\u201d during his recent detention.<\/p>\n<p>In a Saturday statement, his lawyer, Tope Temokun, alleged that police officers fractured Sowore\u2019s arm during a violent attempt to forcibly transfer him from one cell to another around 6 a.m. on Friday, August 8, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>The team rejected the police\u2019s official account, which claimed Sowore arrived at their facility with a bandage, calling it \u201cfalse, self-indicting, and illogical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Temokun urged the police to publish the inventory of Sowore\u2019s possessions seized during his arrest as evidence to support their claims.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, Sowore was denied access to his own medical team and instead offered treatment by an unqualified first-aider, without X-rays or proper diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>His refusal to be examined by police medical personnel, the lawyers said, was to prevent \u201cmanipulation of evidence\u201d by those accused of causing the injury.<\/p>\n<p>The legal team also criticised the police for ignoring other allegations, including the alleged theft of Sowore\u2019s Ray-Ban AI glasses by an officer, while quickly issuing public denials over the assault claims.<\/p>\n<p>Temokun argued that Sowore\u2019s refusal to write a statement, cited by police as justification for his detention, is within his constitutional rights.<\/p>\n<p>The team cited Section 35(2) of the Nigerian Constitution and Section 60(1) of the Police Act 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe fact remains unshaken: Omoyele Sowore\u2019s arm was broken in police custody, under their control.
