Masra\u2019s trial came alongside nearly 70 others accused of participating in the killings, which authorities said stemmed from a dispute between ethnic Fulani herders and Ngambaye farmers over grazing and farming boundaries.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-3 ai-track\" data-ai=\"WzMsMCwiSXNhYWMiLCIiLDRd\" style=\"margin: 8px auto; text-align: center; display: block; clear: both;\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/forms\/d\/e\/1FAIpQLSd3GiRw0g6bOS3kAtHb1Yhc5Jic6iTkM9pA5DhIB13uZgDpGQ\/viewform?usp=sharing&amp;ouid=102633326415294296882\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-lazyloaded=\"1\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1026109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naijanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-08-09-at-16.23.48.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"560\"\/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1026109\" src=\"https:\/\/www.naijanews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/WhatsApp-Image-2025-08-09-at-16.23.48.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"672\" height=\"560\"\/><\/noscript><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Lead defence lawyer Francis Kadjilembaye condemned the ruling, describing it as politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cOur client has just been the object of a humiliation,\u201d <\/em>Kadjilembaye told AFP.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe has just been convicted on the basis of an empty dossier, on the basis of assumptions and in the absence of evidence. What we had witnessed was the weaponisation of the courts.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Masra\u2019s party, Transformers, said it would issue a \u201cspecial message\u201d in response to the judgment.<\/p>\n<p>Masra was arrested on May 16, two days after the violence, and charged with inciting hatred, revolt, forming and complicity with armed gangs, complicity in murder, arson, and desecration of graves.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyers insisted no concrete evidence was presented against him. They also revealed he went on a hunger strike for nearly a month in June while in detention.<\/p>\n<p>A trained economist in France and Cameroon, Masra rose to prominence as a staunch opponent of Chad\u2019s ruling authorities.<\/p>\n<p>He fled the country after a 2022 crackdown on his supporters, only returning under a 2024 amnesty deal.<\/p>\n<p>In a surprising political turn, he was appointed prime minister in January 2024, serving until May that year, five months before the presidential election.<\/p>\n<p>Running against D\u00e9by, Masra secured 18.5% of the vote against the president\u2019s 61.3%, but controversially claimed victory.<\/p>\n<p>The May 14 killings form part of a wider pattern of deadly clashes between nomadic herders and sedentary farmers in Chad.<\/p>\n<p>The International Crisis Group estimates that such conflicts have caused over 1,000 deaths and 2,000 injuries between 2021 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Masra, from the Ngambaye ethnic group in Chad\u2019s south, remains a popular figure among the predominantly Christian and animist communities who have long accused the Muslim-dominated government in N\u2019Djamena of marginalisation.<\/p>\n<p><!-- CONTENT END 4 --><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><span class=\"copyright\"><strong>\u00a9 2025 Naija News, a division of Polance Media Inc.
