{"id":235929,"date":"2025-09-23T20:21:13","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T20:21:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.name.ng\/news\/igbo-elders-to-tinubu-free-nnamdi-kanu-now-his-health-is-failing\/"},"modified":"2025-09-23T20:21:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-23T20:21:13","slug":"igbo-elders-to-tinubu-free-nnamdi-kanu-now-his-health-is-failing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/igbo-elders-to-tinubu-free-nnamdi-kanu-now-his-health-is-failing\/","title":{"rendered":"Igbo elders to Tinubu: Free Nnamdi Kanu now, his health is failing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p>The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide has asked President Bola <a href=\"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/tinubu\">Tinubu <\/a>to order the immediate and unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on Tuesday, Alpha Ikpeama, Director-General of UNIEC, said Kanu\u2019s continued detention despite multiple court rulings in his favour poses a serious threat to his health and Nigeria\u2019s unity.<\/p>\n<p>The group said Kanu\u2019s ordeal began in October 2015 when he was arrested in Lagos by the Department of State Services (DSS) and charged with treason, terrorism, and managing an unlawful society.<\/p>\n<p>He was granted bail in 2017 but fled the country after soldiers invaded his Umuahia residence.<\/p>\n<p>The elders recalled Kanu\u2019s extraordinary rendition in June 2021, alleging that he was abducted in Kenya and flown to Nigeria, where he has remained in DSS custody.<\/p>\n<p>They noted that several courts, including the UN Human Rights Group in 2022, the Court of Appeal in Abuja in 2022, the Federal High Court in Umuahia in 2022, and the High Court of Kenya in 2025, have ruled against his detention.<\/p>\n<p>UNIEC warned that Kanu\u2019s health has reached a critical stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn September 17, 2025, his lawyers revealed that he is battling dangerously low potassium levels and other complications that could trigger heart failure,\u201d the group said.<\/p>\n<p>The council accused the previous administration of targeting the Igbo, adding that Tinubu\u2019s government has allowed the injustice to continue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnity must not only be in theory; it must be reflected in practice,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>The elders also decried what they described as double standards, saying other agitators such as Sunday Igboho and Ibrahim El-Zakzaky have regained freedom, while Kanu remains detained.<\/p>\n<p>They urged Ohanaeze Ndigbo, south-east governors, traditional rulers, church leaders, youth, and civil society groups to speak with one voice in demanding Kanu\u2019s release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday it is Mazi Nnamdi Kanu; tomorrow it could be any one of us.
