The motion, titled \u201cUrgent Need to Correct Misconceptions Regarding the Purported \u2018Christian Genocide\u2019 Narrative in Nigeria and International Communities,\u201d is sponsored by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume (Borno South) and co-sponsored by several senior lawmakers, including Senators Sani Musa, Magatakarda Wamako, Ibrahim Bomai, and Ahmed Wadada.<\/p>\n

Senators Raise Alarm Over \u2018Misleading Narratives\u2019<\/h3>\n

In the draft motion, Ndume expressed alarm over what he described as a growing wave of misleading claims in both local and foreign media alleging systematic attacks on Christians in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging the devastating assaults suffered by Christian communities, the lawmaker stressed that violent attacks have affected citizens of all faiths. He warned that framing the crisis in purely religious terms could inflame sectarian tensions and distort international understanding of Nigeria\u2019s complex security landscape.<\/p>\n

According to the motion, Nigeria\u2019s insecurity stems from terrorism, insurgency, banditry, communal conflicts, and criminal violence \u2014 all of which have claimed lives across religious, ethnic, and regional lines.<\/p>\n

Fear Over US Designation<\/h3>\n

The Senate also expressed unease about developments in Washington, where some lawmakers are pushing to designate Nigeria as a \u201cCountry of Particular Concern\u201d (CPC) for alleged religious persecution.<\/p>\n

Lawmakers cautioned that such a designation could damage Nigeria\u2019s diplomatic standing and trigger economic consequences. The motion reaffirmed that the Nigerian government is constitutionally obligated to protect the lives and property of all citizens, regardless of their religion or ethnicity.<\/p>\n

Senate\u2019s Strategy: Facts and Diplomacy<\/h3>\n

To counter the growing international narrative, the Senate is proposing a coordinated communication and diplomatic strategy. Key elements include:<\/p>\n

  2. Releasing verified data and investigative reports to clarify casualty figures and contexts.<\/li>\n
  3. Strengthening collaboration between the Senate Committees on Foreign Affairs, National Security, and Information with relevant ministries to shape Nigeria\u2019s international messaging.<\/li>\n
  4. Urging local media, civil society, and religious leaders to exercise restraint and accuracy in public statements to avoid stoking sectarian division.<\/li>\n
  5. The Senate also called on foreign embassies, international organisations, and media outlets to rely on balanced and credible information, rather than unverified claims, when reporting on religiously sensitive matters in Nigeria.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that the American government recently reiterated its \u201cdeep concern\u201d over targeted attacks on Christians and other vulnerable groups in Nigeria. The statement came after prominent American TV host Bill Maher devoted part of his HBO show to what he called a \u201csilent genocide\u201d against Christians in the country.<\/p>\n

    Maher accused the Western media of ignoring mass killings by Boko Haram, ISIS-West Africa, and Fulani militias, citing claims that more than 100,000 Christians have been killed since 2009 and thousands of churches destroyed.<\/p>\n

    His comments drew support from Republican Congresswoman Nancy Mace, who said the crisis had not received the attention it deserves from the global media.<\/p>\n

    Government Dismisses Genocide Claims<\/h3>\n

    Reacting to the growing debate, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, dismissed the \u201cChristian genocide\u201d narrative as false and divisive.<\/p>\n

    He stressed that terrorist groups target Nigerians indiscriminately, noting that Muslims, Christians, and non-religious citizens alike have suffered from extremist violence.<\/p>\n
