{"id":238287,"date":"2025-12-16T06:46:26","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T06:46:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.name.ng\/news\/they-said-i-wanted-to-kill-him-aisha-buhari-recounts-how-buharis-illness-began-in-2017\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T06:46:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T06:46:26","slug":"they-said-i-wanted-to-kill-him-aisha-buhari-recounts-how-buharis-illness-began-in-2017","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/they-said-i-wanted-to-kill-him-aisha-buhari-recounts-how-buharis-illness-began-in-2017\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cThey said I wanted to kill him\u201d \u2013 Aisha Buhari recounts how Buhari\u2019s illness began in 2017"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-start=\"80\" data-end=\"244\">Former First Lady Aisha Buhari, has said her late husband, Muhammadu Buhari, began locking his room after rumours in Aso Rock alleged that she planned to kill him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"246\" data-end=\"396\">She said the gossip disrupted Buhari\u2019s feeding routine and contributed to the health crisis that forced him to take 154 days of medical leave in 2017.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"477\">Aisha said Buhari\u2019s illness was neither mysterious nor the result of poisoning.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"479\" data-end=\"659\">Her account is contained in a new biography titled <em data-start=\"530\" data-end=\"589\">From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari<\/em>, authored by Charles Omole and launched at the State House on Monday.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"661\" data-end=\"803\">The 600-page book chronicles Buhari\u2019s life from his early years in Daura, Katsina state, to his final hours in a London hospital in July 2025.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"805\" data-end=\"1000\">According to the book, Aisha supervised Buhari\u2019s meals and supplements at specific hours, a routine she said helped \u201ca slender man with a long history of malnutrition symptoms\u201d maintain strength.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1135\">\u201cElderly bodies require gentle, consistent support,\u201d she recalled, adding, \u201cHe doesn\u2019t have a chronic illness. Keep him on schedule.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1137\" data-end=\"1364\">The book said Aisha convened a meeting with close staff, including Buhari\u2019s physician, Suhayb Rafindadi, Bashir Abubakar, chief security officer, the housekeeper and the director-general of the SSS, to outline the feeding plan.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1366\" data-end=\"1530\">She said the routine involved \u201cdaily, at specific hours, cups and bowls with tailored vitamin powders and oils, a touch of protein here, a change to cereals there\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1532\" data-end=\"1570\">However, the routine later broke down.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1680\">\u201cThen came the gossip and the fearmongering. They said I wanted to kill him,\u201d the book quoted her as saying.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1682\" data-end=\"1837\">She said Buhari believed the rumours for about a week, began locking his room and changed his habits, leading to missed meals and discontinued supplements.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1839\" data-end=\"1912\">\u201cFor a year, he did not have lunch. They mismanaged his meals,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1914\" data-end=\"2086\">The deterioration culminated in Buhari\u2019s two prolonged medical trips to the United Kingdom in 2017, during which he handed over power to Yemi Osinbajo, then vice-president.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2088\" data-end=\"2204\">Omole wrote that Buhari later admitted he had \u201cnever been so ill\u201d and received blood transfusions during the period.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2206\" data-end=\"2342\">Aisha dismissed claims that her husband was poisoned, insisting that \u201closs of a routine, \u2018my nutrition,\u2019 was the genesis of the crisis\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2344\" data-end=\"2446\">She said doctors in London prescribed a stricter nutritional regimen, which Buhari initially resisted, adding that\u00a0she eventually took charge of administering the supplements, adding them to his meals.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2563\" data-end=\"2684\">\u201cAfter just three days, he threw away the stick he was walking with. After a week, he was receiving relatives,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2686\" data-end=\"2837\">Omole noted that Buhari\u2019s medical trips sparked rumours and conspiracy theories, including claims that he had a body double known as \u201cJibril of Sudan\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2839\" data-end=\"2981\">Aisha dismissed the claims as absurd, blaming poor strategic communication for allowing \u201cbanal developments to metastasise into conspiracies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2983\" data-end=\"3158\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">She also alleged that mistrust within the presidency, including claims of surveillance and bugging of Buhari\u2019s office, contributed to fear and pressure during his final years.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former First Lady Aisha Buhari, has said her late husband, Muhammadu Buhari, began locking his room after rumours in Aso Rock alleged that she planned to kill him.
