{"id":238559,"date":"2025-12-25T16:21:37","date_gmt":"2025-12-25T16:21:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.name.ng\/news\/asera-takes-over-power-regulation-duties-in-abia-as-nerc-transfers-role\/"},"modified":"2025-12-25T16:21:37","modified_gmt":"2025-12-25T16:21:37","slug":"asera-takes-over-power-regulation-duties-in-abia-as-nerc-transfers-role","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/asera-takes-over-power-regulation-duties-in-abia-as-nerc-transfers-role\/","title":{"rendered":"ASERA takes over power regulation duties in Abia as NERC transfers role"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"mvp-content-main\">\n<p>The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has authorized the <a href=\"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/abia\">Abia <\/a>State Electricity Regulatory Authority ASERA, to become the statutory regulator for electricity sector activities in the state.<\/p>\n<p>The Chairman and CEO of the ASERA,\u00a0\u00a0Mr Emeka Onyegbule, who disclosed this on Wednesday at the Government House, Umuahia, said the authority to regulate the electricity market in <a href=\"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/abia\">Abia <\/a>State takes effect from December 24, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>He recalled that Nigeria\u2019s Constitution was amended in 2023 to enable the states to undertake electricity generation, distribution and transmission.<\/p>\n<p>According to Onyegbule, following the enactment of the law and the birth of the state electricity markets, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission in Abuja gave an interim order permitting the states to go ahead and begin the establishment of regulatory institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo effectively from today, the responsibility and the mandate to regulate oversight and manage the <a href=\"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/abia\">Abia <\/a>State electricity market falls on ASERA and no longer NERC,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that all activities within the electricity value-chain, including generation, transmission, distribution and trading now\u00a0\u00a0fall under the direct oversight and regulation of ASERA.<\/p>\n<p>Onyegbule added that complaints and conflicts involving consumers and power distributors would henceforth be handled by ASERA, and no more NERC.<\/p>\n<p>Also speaking, <a href=\"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/abia\">Abia <\/a>State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said that the enactment of the Electricity Act of 2025 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/abiaradiostations.com.ng\/news\/abia\">Abia <\/a>State government made the progress achieved in the electricity sub-sector possible.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that ASERA has been empowered to issue metering and billing licenses to encourage private investment in meter deployment.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v9.0&amp;appId=420332301344305\" nonce=\"sm97MhBO\" type=\"pmdelayedscript\" data-cfasync=\"false\" data-no-optimize=\"1\" data-no-defer=\"1\" data-no-minify=\"1\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has authorized the Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority ASERA, to become the statutory regulator for electricity sector activities in the state.
