The National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ladipo Johnson, has criticised the wave of defections by governors and prominent political figures to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), describing it as \u201ca shame and a pity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Speaking in an interview on Friday, Johnson said the reasons behind the defections remain unclear, questioning whether they are truly driven by concerns for governance or national interest.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think the governors themselves know why they are gravitating towards the President or the APC.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome have moved from the PDP and other parties. I\u2019m not convinced it has anything to do with good governance or the country. It is quite a shame and a pity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Johnson, however, expressed confidence that the electorate would ultimately determine the outcome of future elections.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt the end of the day, it is the people who will decide what happens. Even if you have governors in all 36 states, other factors could still come into play.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s not over until it\u2019s over. We are just entering an election year, with elections scheduled for next year,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
His remarks come amid a series of defections in 2025 involving governors and political figures elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as speculation over a possible defection by the only NNPP-elected governor, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf.<\/p>\n
In recent months, several governors have moved from the PDP to the APC, including Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, and Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori. Oborevwori\u2019s deputy, Monday Onyeme, also joined the APC.<\/p>\n
Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang is the latest to defect from the PDP to the APC.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke resigned from the PDP but defected to the Accord Party, where he was issued a membership card marked 001 at a ceremony held at the Government House in Jos.<\/p>\n
The wave of defections has been most pronounced in the South-South region, affecting states such as Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Delta, Cross River, and Edo, although Edo and Cross River already have APC governors.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
