Former Ekiti State Governor, Segun Oni, has defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), formally registering as a member at his country home in Ifaki-Ekiti.<\/p>\n
The coordinator of the APC electronic registration exercise in Ekiti State, Adesola Adedayo, confirmed the development on Monday in Ado-Ekiti.<\/p>\n
Adedayo, who also serves as the Commissioner for Youth Development, described Oni\u2019s defection as a major boost to the ruling party.<\/p>\n
He said Oni registered on Sunday, adding momentum to the party\u2019s ongoing e-registration exercise and strengthening its progressive base in the state.<\/p>\n
According to him, the former governor remains a popular grassroots politician whose entry would add value to the APC and reinforce its electoral strength.<\/p>\n
Oni served as Ekiti State governor between 2007 and 2010 under the Peoples Democratic Party and was the SDP\u2019s governorship candidate in the 2022 election.<\/p>\n
Adedayo said the defection signals a significant political realignment ahead of the 2026 Ekiti governorship election and the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n
He urged party leaders to intensify mobilisation efforts across the state, noting that Oni\u2019s registration came shortly after Governor Biodun Oyebanji revalidated his APC membership.<\/p>\n
He added that the development would further energise the party at the grassroots level.<\/p>\n
