Former lawmakers of the National Assembly have announced their support for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu <\/a>in 2027.<\/span><\/p>\n

The former lawmakers made their decision known during the 2026 National Summit of Former Legislators which took place in Abuja on Saturday, January 24.<\/span><\/p>\n

Themed \u201cNational Unity and Nation Building: Beyond 2031,\u201d the summit was organised by the National Forum of Former Legislators (NFFL) with the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, as the convener.<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking at the summit, the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin who championed the support said re-electing Tinubu <\/a>would ensure the full implementation of his comprehensive reform agenda for the positive transformation of Nigeria and her people.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI appeal that we should abide by the principle of rotation, which has brought sanity and equality since the beginning of the Fourth Republic. Of course, now the president, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is in his first term, and, as noted by other speakers, let\u2019s not reinvent the wheel.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve seen that the rotational system is working. We shall allow it to work. And so, as said by the Honourable Tunji Ojo, the president is doing well. He has said a few of the things the President is doing to bring prosperity to our nation. So, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu <\/a>should be allowed to do two full terms,\u201d Jibrin said.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement issued by his media aide, Ismail Mudashir, the Deputy Senate President also pledged to forward a proposal for embedding the rotational system in the Constitution to the National Assembly. <\/span><\/p>\n

He also stressed the need for national unity, mentorship, and continuity in governance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Citing the committment of the leadership of the National Assembly to a partnership with the NFFL and similar bodies, Jibrin said, \u201cWe recognise that governance does not end with tenure, and that patriotism is a lifelong duty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He commended the former legislators and highlighted the important role they play in sustaining and championing the improvement of the nation\u2019s democracy.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFormer legislators occupy a unique and respected place in our national life. You are men and women who have had the privilege and the burden of lawmaking.
