The Labour Party (LP) has dismissed speculation that former presidential candidate Peter Obi\u00a0might return to the party.<\/p>\n
The National Secretary, Darlington Okocha, while speaking at a meeting of the Usman-led National Working Committee (NWC) on Tuesday, described Obi as \u201ca man of principle,\u201d adding that his departure from the Labour Party to another party was a decision made after careful consideration.<\/p>\n
Okocha said questions about Obi\u2019s return to the Labour Party must be set aside in light of the party\u2019s current leadership strength.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor him to have left Labour Party, I don\u2019t see him as somebody that will come back again. He\u2019s quite principled,\u201d<\/em> Okocha stated, noting that the party has wished Obi well in his new political journey.<\/p>\n He added that the Labour Party continues to have a competent and capable national leader, emphasizing that \u201cintegrity matters in everything we do,\u201d commending Obi for maintaining his.<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Obi, has reiterated the call for the National Assembly to make clear and urgent electoral reforms ahead of the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n Obi, in a statement on Tuesday released via his \ud835\udd4f account, said the reforms must reflect the will of the Nigerian people and demonstrate electoral integrity.<\/p>\n According to him, he joined the peaceful protest on Monday to identify with the people in demanding electoral integrity.<\/p>\n He added that aspirants for public office must provide verifiable records of their primary, secondary, and tertiary education, along with fulfilling other constitutional requirements such as age and qualifications.<\/p>\n The former Anambra State Governor also insisted that part of the electoral reforms must mandate the transmission of election results electronically and in real time to protect the people\u2019s mandate and eliminate manipulation.<\/p>\n Taking a swipe at a recent statement credited to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, about the likely challenges electronic transmission of results may face, Obi insisted that claims that certain states lack network coverage are no longer acceptable.<\/p>\n He called on the youths to remain steadfast in their call for electoral reforms, maintaining that a new and better Nigeria is possible.<\/p>\n The full statement, as made available to Abia Radio News<\/strong>, reads: \u201cYesterday, February 9th, I participated in a peaceful protest at the National Assembly to demand urgent electoral reforms that truly reflect the will of the Nigerian people.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cOur demands were clear and non-negotiable: anyone seeking to hold titles such as Honourable, Distinguished, or Excellency must emerge through a transparent and honourable process. Aspirants for public office should provide verifiable records of their primary, secondary, and tertiary education, along with fulfilling other constitutional requirements such as age and qualifications. No one should aspire to lead without having gone through due process.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cBeyond eligibility, candidates must engage in open campaigns, public scrutiny, and debates as mandated by law. Most importantly, election results must be transmitted electronically and in real time to protect the people\u2019s mandate and eliminate manipulation.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cClaims that certain states lack network coverage are no longer acceptable. Financial institutions operate nationwide through secure digital networks to conduct transactions and collect taxes on a daily basis. If banking systems function seamlessly, our electoral system can and should do the same.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cNigeria must stop being a so-called Giant of Africa that disgraces the continent and instead become a beacon of exemplary governance, beginning with credible elections.<\/em><\/p>\n \u201cWe owe the younger generation a nation built on order, justice, and trust, not one mired in chaos and impunity.
