Obi revisited Tinubu’s 2023 campaign promises of stable electricity, enhanced welfare, and robust anti-corruption efforts, noting that the president had explicitly challenged the electorate not to vote him in for a second term if he failed to deliver.

“At present, however, these conditions have worsened,” Obi stated. “Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas… and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased.”

In a counter-statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, the administration fired back, stating that Obi’s view reflects a highly selective, distorted, and hollow understanding of Nigeria’s political realities.

Onanuga emphasized that Obi “forgets our country does not run a parliamentary system of government like the UK,” explaining that Nigeria operates under a presidential system where the leader is elected to a fixed four-year term.

The Presidency maintained that recent weekend polls in states like Ekiti, Nasarawa, Enugu, Ondo, and Rivers delivered resounding victories for the ruling party, functioning as an early referendum that proves President Tinubu remains highly popular with the electorate. Onanuga advised Obi to stop using social media to harangue the president out of office, calling the move anti-democratic and adding that the NDC candidate should simply wait for the January 2027 general elections to let the voters decide.

The Presidency further defended President Tinubu’s track record, pointing out that the administration inherited a deeply troubled and “dead horse economy” but has implemented bold, courageous structural reforms that previous leaders avoided. According to the state house, these interventions have yielded verifiable progress, including positive GDP growth every quarter, record-high foreign reserves over $50 billion, a stabilized Naira-to-dollar exchange rate, and a soaring stock market that has generated massive wealth for over six million Nigerian investors.

On energy, Onanuga dismissed Obi’s accusations by stating that the president never guaranteed immediate 24-hour electricity but promised to fix the sector by all means necessary. The administration highlighted the signing of the Electricity Act, the rollout of millions of prepaid meters to end fraudulent estimated billing, and the distribution of off-grid solar power to public institutions as proof of massive infrastructural delivery. The Presidency also pointed to the introduction of compressed natural gas (CNG) as an affordable fuel alternative, the provision of interest-free student loans, and a completely uninterrupted academic calendar free of trade union strikes as major milestones achieved under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

While acknowledging that the country faces a high cost of living, the administration maintained that the economic strain is part of a broader global disruption caused by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, specifically the disruption to supply chains and crude prices after America and Israel attacked Iran.

Onanuga added that President Tinubu has a competent team of thinkers and doers focused entirely on long-term structural stabilization, rather than empty political rhetoric. He added that Obi’s persistent online criticisms confirm that the opposition leader “lives in his self-constructed echo chambers, where he reels off lie after lie to himself and believes his self-created reality,” a fantasy that the Presidency dismissed as a mere figment of his imagination.

The Presidency has hit back at 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Peter Obi, describing his call for President Bola Tinubu’s resignation as childish, simplistic, and an unwarranted distraction.
