Diaspora Nigerians Back Gov Otti, Seal Strategic Partnership to Drive Abia’s Devt

Nigerians in the diaspora have thrown their weight behind Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, forging a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the state’s transformation and positioning it as a model for subnational development in Nigeria.

The endorsement was contained in a communiqué issued in Washington, D.C., by the Diaspora Alliance & Coalition, which announced a formal collaboration framework with the Abia State Government anchored on investment, knowledge transfer, and institutional reform.

Central to the partnership is a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) designed to integrate diaspora expertise, capital, and global networks into Abia’s development agenda. The coalition described the move as a significant departure from past approaches that largely sidelined Nigerians abroad.

The communiqué, jointly signed by the Executive President of the Diaspora Alliance, Emmanuel Ihim; Chairman of the World Igbo Congress, Dr. Festus Okoye; and Dr. Hycienth Nwachukwu of Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Worldwide (DMV), commended Governor Otti for his clarity of purpose, courage in leadership, and commitment to transformation. It described his administration as a reference point for leveraging diaspora engagement for development.

According to the group, Abia State is demonstrating a governance model anchored on fiscal discipline, institutional accountability, and policy-driven reforms. It noted that the Otti administration has shown commitment to transparency in public finance, infrastructure renewal, improved ease of doing business, and restoration of public confidence in governance.

Describing the initiative as a paradigm shift, the coalition said diaspora Nigerians, long contributors to the nation’s economy, are now being repositioned as active partners rather than passive supporters.

Key projects under the agreement include the proposed Diaspora Smart City, Abia International Schools, a STEM Academy, and a Digital Innovation Hub, all aimed at promoting innovation, education, and economic growth. The Smart City is expected to feature secure residential communities, business parks, and innovation clusters, while the schools will serve as centres of academic excellence.

The partnership also aligns with Abia’s broader economic strategy, which prioritizes industrialisation, agro-processing, clean energy, tourism, and the creative sector as pathways to diversify revenue and drive sustainable growth.

The coalition emphasized that the success of reforms depends on governance credibility, noting that consistency, transparency, and integrity have been key to the administration’s growing appeal. It added that Governor Otti’s leadership reflects a new model of governance that recognizes Nigerians in the diaspora as critical stakeholders in development.

The group further called on Nigerians abroad to take advantage of the partnership by investing, mentoring, and contributing to development initiatives across sectors, including education, healthcare, technology, and industrialisation.

Reaffirming its commitment, the coalition expressed confidence that the collaboration would deliver measurable outcomes and position Abia as a modern, competitive, and globally connected economy. It described the initiative as the beginning of a “New Abia” driven by collective responsibility and shared vision among citizens at home and in the diaspora.
