Nenu Hospital Anniversary: Community Urged to Embrace Health Insurance

Residents of Nenu and its environs in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State have been urged to enrol in the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme at the Nenu Specialist Hospital to improve access to affordable healthcare.

The call was made by a community stakeholder, Barrister Ihunanya Onwutuebe, during an event marking one year of healthcare service delivery by the hospital.

Onwutuebe also encouraged residents to partner with the hospital to address health challenges, noting that the founder, Dr. Chris Akomas, had fulfilled his vision of establishing the facility after years of effort.

In his remarks, Chairman of the community’s Consultative Assembly, High Chief Markson Etonyeaku, said the hospital represents the realisation of a long-standing desire by the people to upgrade their community health facility to a standard comparable to a General Hospital. He attributed the achievement to Dr. Akomas, describing him as the driving force behind the project.

Etonyeaku added that the hospital is equipped with facilities that rival those found in many general hospitals, assuring that its management is committed to delivering quality healthcare services in the area.

Earlier, the Chief Medical Director, Prof. P.E.N. Onyemachi, disclosed that since its official opening last year, the hospital has treated 973 patients, recorded four normal deliveries and conducted four surgeries, alongside 1,071 laboratory investigations.

He noted that the hospital is equipped with modern medical facilities, including an incinerator, autoclave, phototherapy and ECG machines, MRI equipment, dialysis units, and a fully equipped ambulance service.

Onyemachi expressed gratitude to Dr. Akomas for his investment in the project and prayed for continued strength and wisdom for him to sustain his contributions to healthcare delivery.

Also speaking, Chairman of the occasion and President General of the community, Mazi Ibeabuchi Ugwumba, thanked God for the successful establishment of the hospital and assured staff of continued support, describing Dr. Akomas as a committed labour leader and philanthropist.

In a vote of thanks, Prof. Mazi Ejikem commended the hospital staff for their dedication and expressed optimism that the facility would, in due course, be incorporated into the Abia State University Teaching Hospital system.

He also appreciated donors, partners, and community members for their support in sustaining the hospital, while praying for continued blessings for Dr. Akomas for his contributions to the development of the community.
