Abia Government to Renovate Umuahia Township Stadium, Considers Establishment of Sports Development Zone

The Abia State Government has announced plans to renovate the Umuahia Township Stadium to ensure that sporting activities and athlete development in the state are not disrupted while work progresses on the proposed Umuahia Stadium City Project, which is expected to be flagged off before the end of the year.
The disclosure was made by the Abia State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Nwaobilor Nwadinma Ananaba, during a strategic meeting with the chairmen and secretaries of the state’s 35 sports associations. The meeting was held at the Bishop Nwaedo Banquet Hall along BCA Road, Umuahia.
Speaking during the interactive session, the Commissioner revealed that the state government is also considering the establishment of a Sports Development Zone. According to him, the proposed zone will provide a tax-free environment for manufacturers to produce sports kits, equipment and related materials. He noted that the initiative would not only accelerate sports development in the state but also create employment opportunities and stimulate economic growth.

Sir Ananaba further disclosed that a bill aimed at enhancing sports funding in the state is currently being considered. When passed into law, the legislation is expected to provide a more sustainable framework for financing sporting activities and addressing the perennial challenge of inadequate funding.

The Commissioner assured all sports associations of the government’s commitment to supporting their activities. He, however, urged them to intensify grassroots development programmes, identify and nurture young talents, and explore sponsorship opportunities to complement government efforts.
He emphasised the need for unity among the various associations, stressing that collaboration and teamwork would be essential in achieving the administration’s vision for sports development.
“All the associations must be united to ensure the accomplishment of government goals in sports development,” he stated.

In her welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Pastor Jane Maxwell Igwe, expressed appreciation to the chairmen and secretaries for accepting the responsibility of leading their respective associations. She encouraged them to engage in robust discussions, set measurable targets and develop realistic plans for the advancement of their sports.
Drawing inspiration from the Scriptures, she reminded participants of the importance of proper planning, noting that even Jesus Christ taught the necessity of counting the cost before embarking on any project.
Earlier, the Director of Sports, Comrade George Obioma, highlighted the numerous responsibilities entrusted to the sports associations and urged both chairmen and secretaries to approach their duties with dedication, commitment and professionalism. He particularly challenged the secretaries to be proactive, describing them as indispensable to the success of their respective associations.
The meeting also provided an opportunity for the chairmen of the various associations to present their development roadmaps to the Commissioner.

While addressing the gathering, Comrade Obioma informed participants that the Abia State Basketball Association had commenced the construction of a hostel at the Umuahia Township Stadium to provide accommodation for athletes during camping and competitions. He commended the association for the initiative before inviting its chairman, Mr Victor Ifeanyi Okoro, to present the association’s development blueprint.

In his presentation, Mr Okoro outlined key objectives, including grassroots basketball development, increased participation of women in the sport, talent identification programmes and the provision of standard training and competition facilities across the state.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Abia State Badminton Association, Mr Abel Sunday, highlighted the association’s achievements, including the successful hosting of two international competitions in the previous year. He disclosed that the association aims to have 5,000 badminton players, 500 para-badminton athletes and 100 qualified badminton coaches in Abia State by the year 2030.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Powerlifting Association, Mr John Nwosu, revealed that Esther Nwogu and Onyinyechi Mark are currently in the national camp preparing for the Commonwealth Games, a development he attributed to the association’s sustained efforts in athlete development. He further announced plans to organise an Open Powerlifting Championship in August.
The meeting concluded with renewed optimism among stakeholders, as participants described the engagement as another significant step towards strengthening sports administration and aligning the activities of the associations with the present administration’s vision for sustainable sports development in Abia State.

The interactive session underscored the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for sports to thrive while encouraging associations to take greater responsibility for the growth and success of their respective disciplines.
