Abia Govt to Relocate Palm Kernel Dealers from Ameke Road.

The Abia State Government has announced plans to relocate palm kernel dealers and crackers operating along Nkata Ameke Road in Umuahia to a more suitable location as part of efforts to protect public health and ensure orderly urban development.

The General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA), Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, disclosed this during an engagement meeting with the palm kernel dealers. He said the government recognizes the importance of their business and is committed to providing an environment where they can operate without posing health risks to residents.

Agomoh explained that the government is aware of the environmental and health implications of the dealers’ current operations and assured them of a seamless relocation process.

According to him, the administration of Governor Alex Otti remains committed to ensuring that businesses operate in organized and conducive locations in line with its urban renewal and development agenda.

He noted that the Ameke axis, where the dealers currently operate, is situated along a railway corridor, while the smoke generated from palm kernel processing has become a source of concern to residents and road users in the area.

The UCDA boss further clarified that the relocation exercise would affect not only those operating directly on the railway track but also those carrying out the business on private plots within the vicinity.

Responding on behalf of the dealers, the Vice President of the Palm Kernel Dealers Association, Mrs. Queen Uwandu, commended the UCDA General Manager and the Abia State Government for their peaceful approach and for convening the engagement meeting.

She assured the government of the association’s cooperation and appealed that the dealers be relocated to an area with adequate access to water to support their operations.

The meeting was attended by the Director of Town Planning in the agency, Mr. Tony Onyemereneze, as well as other heads of departments.
