Abia Muslims call for peace, religious tolerance in Nigeria
Muslim faithful in Abia State on Friday, celebrated the Eid el Fitr festival with calls for peace, unity and religious tolerance among Nigerians.
The Muslim faithful made the call at Umuahia township stadium, during the Eid prayers.
Delivering his message, the Chief Imam of Umuahia Central Mosque, Mallam Aminu Lawal emphasised the importance of peace, compassion and national cohesion, describing Eid el Fitr as a period that reflects gratitude to Almighty Allah after a month of fasting, prayer and charity.
The Chief Imam appealed to Nigerian Muslims and the wider public to promote mutual respect and working collectively for the progress of society, saying development can only thrive in an atmosphere of unity.
In his message, the leader of the Hausa community in Abia State, Yaro Danladi said the Northern community was committed to peace and bridge- building across different cultures.
Earlier in his message, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti reassured the Muslim faithful and other Abia residents that his administration would continue to treat every religious group with fairness and equity.
DAILY POST reports that Eket street and Lagos street, where two Mosques and business activities of Northerners are located in Umuahia, were buzzing with the festivities and exchange of gifts among faithful.
A young Muslim, Dalhatu Idris, when interviewed, urged Nigerian youths to pray for peace and to shun violent acts.
