The Interim National Chairperson of the Labour Party, Nenadi Usman, has said that only the faction of the party under her leadership will be allowed to take part in the 2027 general elections.

Abia Radio News reports that Usman made this known on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme, where she said the Independent National Electoral Commission recognises her as the authentic chairperson of the party.

She explained that the recognition means her leadership is the only one permitted to invite INEC to supervise party activities such as primaries and congresses, adding that the Julius Abure group has no such authority.

According to her, there is no confusion about who leads the party, as INEC deals only with the leadership she heads.

Usman said party members should now place the interest of Nigeria and the Labour Party above personal disputes, noting that leadership positions have limits and must be respected when they come to an end.

She stated that when a tenure expires, the party’s key officers and members of the National Executive Council are expected to meet with the most senior elected official in the party, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, to decide on the next steps.

She added that after INEC made it clear that there was no recognised leadership at a point, party leaders came together to form a team that organised congresses from the ward level up to a national convention.

Usman said she has chosen a peaceful approach to the crisis, insisting that she is not in conflict with anyone and has no intention of fighting party members over the leadership issue.
