Popular Actor Dies At 53 After Battling Chronic Disease

California-born actor, Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr Mark Sloan on Grey’s Anatomy and Cal Jacobs on Euphoria, has died after a long battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

Abia Radio News reports that the actor, who died at 53, had in 2025 opened up about living with ALS, the most common form of motor neurone disease, a progressive condition that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Before his demise, Eric Dane had been raising awareness about the illness.

Confirmed the death, Eric Dane’s family, in a statement, disclosed that the actor died on Thursday afternoon after a courageous fight, surrounded by his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.

The family describe the deceased’s children as the centre of his world and thanks fans for their continued love and support.

Dane first gained widespread recognition as the charismatic “Dr McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy, becoming a fan favourite on the long-running medical drama. He later takes on darker roles, including the family patriarch, Cal Jacobs, in Euphoria.

Over his career, he also appeared in series such as Charmed and The Last Ship, as well as films including Marley & Me, Valentine’s Day and Burlesque.
