The political crisis in Rivers State has deepened as suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara suffers a major blow, with several of his key supporters and loyalists dumping the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) — a party now gaining momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Multiple political sources confirm that the defectors are now aligning with former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who is positioning himself to clinch the ADC presidential ticket.

On July 23, 2025, the ADC made a bold political statement in Rivers State with a grand launch event in Port Harcourt, led by Amaechi and other opposition heavyweights. The rally reportedly sparked a “massive defection” from Fubara’s PDP faction to the ADC.

A political insider told All Facts Newspaper:

“With the latest developments, there is strong speculation that when Governor Fubara returns to office next month, he might also dump the PDP. Whether he joins the ADC coalition or aligns with the ruling party remains unclear.”

When contacted, Sydney Gbara, Publicity Secretary of the Fubara-led PDP faction, insisted that they remain committed to the party — at least for now.

“For now, the governor has not told me or anybody that we will be joining the coalition. So we are very much in PDP. If the governor comes up today and says we are joining the coalition or APC, I will follow him,” Gbara stated.

On the mass defections, he was blunt:

“Politics is a matter of choice. People are free to take their support wherever they want. But many of us are committed to the governor and will follow his political direction.”

Governor Fubara was suspended on March 18, 2025, alongside his deputy and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, over what party insiders described as an “unmanaged political crisis” in the state.

He is expected to make a political comeback in September, and analysts say his next move could reshape the political landscape in Rivers and beyond.

With the ADC now emerging as a serious contender and Rotimi Amaechi positioning himself at the national level, the stakes for 2027 have just gotten higher.
